Edit Storyline Vincent prevents a young man being shot during an armed shop robbery, but it has a security camera, so the tape must be dealt with. Re-visited this quite recently for the first time in a few years and forgot how much I love this film. I think this is probably my favorite film of Stuart Gordon (R. I. P. ), great as some of his other efforts like Re-Animator and From Beyond are. Besides the outstanding puppetry and stop-motion which I feel are flawless (and in this era of so much CGI is so refreshing to see), I also love the atmosphere of this which feels immersive and it's low-key yet powerful with the mood it sets. One thing about this film that stands out is how it's essentially a dark fantasy/fairy tale type of a story within the context of a Horror film, and it helps make it more unique and distinctive from other films of the time and era. I'm not sure why it's not a film I don't rewatch more often given that it's actually quite rewatchable and with it's scant running time an easy watch for any occasion. The cast are all very good too, with the standouts being Carrie Lorraine as the daughter (such a shame she never acted more), Ian Patrick Williams and Carolyn Purdy as the hateful and uncaring father and stepmother respectively, the two teen goth punk rock girls, and the late great Stephen Lee and Guy Rolfe as the lovable Ralph and the mysterious yet kindly Gabriel, respectively.
